The Porthouse Theatre Academy is a musical theatre summer intensive program for high school graduates intending to enroll at Kent State University’s School of Theatre and Dance as a theatre major. Students will take three (1) credit hour courses in 1) Musical Theatre Dance either beginning
or intermediate level, 2) Voice and Ensemble Singing and 3) Acting and Monologue Preparation. Student will attend afternoon rehearsals for Hello Dolly and will also understudy roles in the production. Master classes will be provided by the professional actors in the Porthouse Theatre company.

The program is ideal for:

  • Students already accepted into the BFA Musical Theatre Program who wish to get a head start on their college career.
  • Students who are not accepted into the BFA Program and are seeking assistance in strengthening their audition skills. The students will have the opportunity to reaudition for the BFA Musical Theatre program after the completion of the summer intensive.
  • Current Kent State Theatre majors who would like to audition for the BFA Musical
    Theatre Program.
    Why Enroll?
    ‐ Receive three credit hours all of which apply to the graduation requirements in
    both the BFA Musical Theatre and the BA Theatre Studies Programs.
    ‐ Get a head start in the School of Theatre and Dance and prepare for the main stage season auditions.
    ‐ Receive advanced training in audition preparation.
    ‐ Enroll in the Equity Membership Candidate Program and receive up to five AEA points.
    ‐ Network with professional theatre artists from across the country.

Porthouse Theatre Academy

High School Division

Session 1--June 24-28

Session 2--July 29-August 2

The Porthouse High School Academy is a summer theatre experience for high school students entering their sophomore, junior or senior years interested in performance. Students will participate in three classes each day in 1) Acting and Performance class, 2) two master classes each day. All students will participate in a cabaret‐style performance, created from the songs, monologues and dance from academy classes. The showcase will be performed for Porthouse company members on the final Friday of the session.

The program is ideal for:
‐ Students looking for an intensive summer learning experience in theatre, particularly those
interested in learning more about theatre as a profession
‐ Students who are planning to audition for acting programs on the University level and are seeking training to set them apart from other high school students
‐ Students who would like more performance experience.
